Plan Would Protect Patients’, Physicians’ Right to Contract
Patients and physicians should always have the right to enter into private agreements for care above and beyond what state or federal health care programs allow. A TMA-backed amendment to the state constitution would preserve Texans’ right to free-market health care. Harris County Medical Society President Russ Kridel, MD, testified for the measure — House Joint Resolution 109 — at the House Select Committee on Federalism and Fiscal Responsibility. The plan would need approval by the state House and Senate — and then the voters. Meanwhile, in Washington, we joined the American Medical Association and more than 60 state medical associations and national specialty societies in a strong letter of support for HR 1310, the Medicare Patient Empowerment Act. We all pledged to work with the bill’s author — U.S. Rep. Tom Price, MD (R-Georgia) — to help pass the bill.
