HOUSE LOOKS FOR "TEXAS SOLUTION" FOR THE UNINSURED
TMA Board of Trustees member Doug Curran, MD, was one of dozens of witnesses to testify at a House Appropriations Subcommittee hearing on a pair of bills to expand health care access for working-but-uninsured Texans. Dr. Curran testified in strong support of House Bill 3791 by Rep. John Zerwas, MD (R-Simonton). The goal of HB 3791 is to create a “Texas solution” for the working poor in Texas, including flexibility in administering the Medicaid program tailored to the needs of the state. Dr. Curran explained that for both economic and human reasons, Texas must find a way to improve Medicaid while simultaneously expanding coverage to low-income Texans. Representative Zerwas emphasized that his bill is not an expansion of the existing Medicaid program. The full House Appropriations Committee should consider the bill this week.
