ATTORNEY GENERAL, BLUE CROSS REACH ACCORD TO END PHYSICIAN RATING SYSTEM

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas agreed to an order from Attorney General Greg Abbott to stop using its Risk Adjusted Cost Index to rate physicians as more or less affordable in providing quality medical care. Blue Cross also agreed to stop a practice General Abbott’s investigation uncovered: terminating physicians from its networks solely for referring patients to out-of-network specialists. TMA President Josie Williams issued a statement applauding the attorney general and encouraging “all health insurance companies operating in Texas to adopt this same pro-patient approach.”
